'Wouldn't It Be Good' hit me right between the eyes - fantastic song, and he was so adorably cute in the vid. The Riddle would be my next fave and I always loved Human Racing and Faces, played them over and over.
 cheers

I grew up in a small Nova Scotian town. I found nothing in common with the local radio, being mostly fishing and country music. As the resident oddball in my school my musical tastes wandered away from that of my friends. They were mostly content with the Police and U2, Chicago and Air Supply. I prefered the experimental and unusual. Thomas Dolby, Thompson Twins, Nik, Howard Jones, The Fixx, Strange Advance, A-ha, Dream Academy, Eurythmics, Level 42, Simple Minds...almost entirely electronic and certainly all UK. It was never easy to find this music on cassette. Most of what I had in my collection I found in the reduced bins because mainstream had rejected them. Sorry to say, but true.
I had Human Racing, The Riddle and Musicola on cassette. I found again my taste missed the common, finding solace in the B-tracks and experiments.
Every song Nik created had merit. From his brilliant lyrics to his catchy percussion and unforgetable melodies, I never found criticism could last much beyond the occasional unmusical moments. And it was these moments that kept his music real, not churned out for the masses.
Shame on You was so catchy it's still stuck in my head. Using vocalizations as percussion was genius. Roses is my favorite from The Riddle. He appealed to my sense of pessimism. Save the Whale rings in my head like admonishment from David Suzuki, the Canadian voice of conscience. Wild Horses let me feel free, unconstrained by the opinions of my peers. Faces warned me that most declarations were not a complete exposure of the truth. Don Quixote reminded me to persevere in spite of the pressure to conform.
Brave, Proud AND Crazy.
And Nik...you have aged well.

Hello there,
well I've been listening to Nik's songs for 25 years now and I love "Elizabeths Eyes", "One step ahead", "Old friends" (together with Elton John) most (recorded in the 80s).
Best greetings from Germany, hope to see you many more times here. I loved the concert in Bochum.

Well it all started with "Wouldn't it be Good", I loved "Dancing Girls" too, heard the re-released "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" and decided before the song was done that I'd buy the album, which was a big step for me as I'd never bought a whole album before.
I remember listening to that cassette on my parent's stereo and hoping desperately I'd like all the songs - I didn't straight away, and hoped they'd grow on me. Thankfully, my dad fell in love with "Bogart" and requested I play the album over and over, and I learned the joy of letting Nik's melodies and convoluted layering do their magic.
After that I liked every Nik release, although "Human Racing", "Wide Boy" and "Don Quixote" took a while to get through to me. My all time fave of the eighties though was and is "When a Heart Beats". Weird song that one, but I love it.
